3×3 basketball emerged as an innovative twist on the conventional full-court version of the sport. Its roots can be traced back to the urban landscapes of the United States in the late 1980s, where this condensed style of basketball gained traction in backyards and parks, evolving into a cultural phenomenon.
Driven by its growing appeal, FIBA subsequently formalized 3×3 as a distinct basketball discipline, aiming to engage a broader audience and offer increased opportunities for member associations and players globally. The sport was professionalized with official rules sanctioned by FIBA.
On June 9, 2017, the executive board of the International Olympic Committee declared that 3×3 basketball would attain the status of an official Olympic sport, featuring in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, for both male and female categories.
